Last week’s long awaited showers, combined with a new downspout linking Elk Point Municipal Library’s eavestrough with the 1,000 litre water tank, have a handy nearby water source ready to go for Elk Point’s Community Gardens.

ELK POINT – Cooperation between the Town of Elk Point’s Public Works department crew, who installed a link between the library’s eavestrough and the gardens’ 1,000 litre water tank, and Mother Nature’s timely gift of much needed rain, along with a generous coat of compost now added to the soil, have Elk Point’s nine raised Community Gardens beds all set for this year’s planting,

Community Garden committee chair Sue Campbell reported last week that five of the beds have now been spoken for, with the remaining four available to be rented for the season, asking fellow committee members to urge anyone interested to contact her at 780-645-9626.

Two of the gardens have a new renter this year, with Elk Point Outreach School joining their next door neighbours at Play2Learn Daycare, which had a successful garden in their raised bed last year, to get growing.

For those still debating what to plant, the committee has a solution. This coming Sunday, starting at 2 p.m., there will be a Seed and Plant Swap at Elk Point Further Education, on the corner of 51 St. and 52 Ave., with everyone welcome not only to attend, but to bring along any excess plants, including perennials, marked with variety if possible, that they wish to share.

The Community Garden committee is already looking ahead for future development, and is waiting for quotes on a small garden shed and a 16-foot gazebo, in hopes that grant funding for these enhancements of their site west of the library may be available.
