AIRDRIE, Alta. — The Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) has implemented a new system to help celebrate children's birthdays and other significant milestones while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As with many first response agencies, we have been overwhelmed with birthday drive-by requests,“ stated a press release from the department. “We appreciate the community’s support and would love to drive by each and every party. However, your first responders must remain safe, healthy and available to respond.“

In order to allow firefighters to stay connected with the community and be a part of the celebrations, the department has developed the AFD Birthday Program for the public. The virtual initiative provides the birthday boy or girl with personalized congratulations and best wishes from the AFD. Details can be found on the City of Airdrie website

“If you are requesting a celebration for a child between the ages of three and 12 years, have a special circumstance, or will be celebrating an even greater milestone like age 75 or older, please complete and submit an event request form and email it to fire.department@airdrie.ca,“ the release stated.

In order to ensure applications can be accommodated, AFD requests forms to be submitted at least five business days in advance.

“We hope that greetings from the AFD will add something special to your celebrations,“ the release read.
