Alberta travelers have a new way to fly as Porter comes on the scene

Remember the days when travel was an 'experience'? Porter is hoping to bring that back for economy air travellers in Alberta. Photo supplied.

Porter Airlines is adding Edmonton and Calgary to its growing network, with flights between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Calgary International Airport (YYC), plus Edmonton International Airport (YEG). The routes will be served with Porter's Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

Porter is taking service further into Alberta, as Calgary marks the airline’s second destination in the province. Edmonton was previously announced this week. Travellers will notice an elevated economy travel experience, points the airline, as flights feature no middle seats, free Wi-Fi, complimentary beer and wine served in real glassware, and premium snacks.

The initial flight schedule starts in mid-February from Edmonton, with one daily flight to Toronto, and on Feb 23 from Calgary, with two daily round-trip flights to Toronto.

“With Porter, Albertans get a service that is non-existent today in economy air travel,” said Kevin Jackson, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Porter Airlines. “We are offering a higher level of economy service at highly competitive fares and are changing the way people think about economy air travel."

“As the gateway for Western Canada, YYC is proud to facilitate yet another option that connects Calgary with more direct access to Toronto,” said Rob Palmer, YYC CFO. “With Porter being the third new airline to connect its fleet to YYC Calgary International Airport in under a year, the airline’s entrance into the Alberta region signals strength in the industry’s confidence in our airport and region."

Porter has up to 100 E195-E2 aircraft on order, providing the ability to operate throughout North America, including destinations across Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean. The airline also serves a regional network of more than 20 destinations on its De Havilland Dash 8-400 fleet, operating from a base at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

Flights are now available for booking at www.flyporter.com and with travel agents.
