CANMORE – Canmore's John Morris will defend his throne in Beijing.
Curling Canada announced Thursday (Jan. 13) the two-time Olympic gold medallist and mixed doubles partner Rachel Homan, a three-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion, are representing Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games next month.
“Rachel and I have played a lot of mixed doubles together over the years with the dream of playing for Canada at the Olympics,” said Morris in a press release. “We can’t wait to get over there and give it our best. We know it’s a tough field, but we’ve worked extremely hard this season and we’ll be fighting hard for gold in Beijing.”
Due to COVID-19, Canada's mixed doubles trials were cancelled in December, which were set to wrap up early January and determine which duo would go to Beijing. Curling Canada, Canadian Olympic Committee and Own the Podium made the decision on the representative.
This is Morris' third time representing Canada at the Olympics, where he'll try to make it three-for-three with gold medals.
In 2018, Morris won gold with Kaitlyn Lawes during mixed doubles debut in PyeongChang. In 2010, Morris won gold in men's curling.
Team Homan was selected to represent Ontario in the 2022 Canadian Scotties Tournament of Hearts starting Jan. 28 to Feb. 6 in Thunder Bay, Ont., following the cancellation of the Scotties trials. However, with Homan being selected to Beijing, Team Duncan will replace Team Homan at the Scotties.
