Close bear encounter forces Canmore trail closure

The Legacy Trail at Canmore Nordic Centre is closed.

CANMORE – A person was forced to deploy bear spray during a close encounter with a bruin on a Canmore trail.

Until further notice, the Legacy Trail at the Canmore Nordic Centre is closed due to bear activity adjacent to the trail on Town of Canmore land.

“(There was) a close encounter between a bear and a member of the public, resulting in bear spray being deployed,” states an advisory from Alberta Parks.

It is not known at this stage whether the bear was a grizzly or black bear.

It is believed the encounter occurred on Wednesday (Oct. 11).

To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear: Make plenty of noise and travel in groups; be aware of your surroundings; Look and listen for bears and their signs;
Keep your pet on a leash; Carry bear spray and make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

Please report all bear sightings immediately to 403-591-7755.

The Outlook will update the story as more information becomes available.
