Conditional sentence order after family dispute goes south

BONNYVILLE - A family dispute went one step too far and resulted in 57-year-old Arnold Raymond John facing a day in court.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, John pleaded guilty to assault in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse.

According to Crown prosecutor Nicole Leinenweber, who described the Oct. 20, 2019 incident, John had inherited a Kehewin residence after a family member passed away. He decided to allow two people to live in the house, but after witnessing how they were treating the property, told them to leave.

John claims the people staying in the house were destroying the residence and doing drugs. After he kicked them out, he gave them an opportunity to gather their belongings, so long as he was present.

It was at this time that a dispute broke out resulting in John punching one of the people in the face.

He was sentenced by Honourable Judge Cheryl Arcand-Kootenay to serve a 12-month conditional sentence order with conditions not to have any contact with the victim and not possess any weapons.
