New dos for a good cause

Organizer James Purdy streaks Leah D’abadie’s hair at the MS Walk registration March 12.

If you see people around town with a red streak in their hair, it's not necessarily a new trend in fashion, but it means they are supporting the Lakeland MS Walk.

“It's a catchy little thing we've done the past couple of years,” says organizer James Purdy. “(It) gets people talking.”

Purdy and other volunteers were at the A&W this past Saturday streaking peoples' hair and helping people register for the walk May 7.

“We had a very good turnout,” he explains.

Town of Bonnyville Coun. Rene Van Brabant was the first to get his hair streaked before he headed to the St. Paul registration to take part in the dunk tank.

The group and A&W staff also collected nearly $1,000 in donations for the Lakeland branch of the MS Society.

About 40 people signed up, but with the walk still two months away and more people signing up in St. Paul, Purdy hopes they can exceed last year's turnout of over 300. Last year, the walk raised $160,000.
