COVID-19 health restrictions to remain in place

Premier Jason Kenney speaks at a COVID-19 press conference.

Alberta will not loosen the current COVID-19 health restrictions on businesses and organizations for at least another two weeks.

On Thursday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, along with Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, said businesses and organizations will stay closed until at least Jan. 21. Albertans and businesses will be given at least one week's notice before changes to the health measures come in place.

In December, casinos, gyms, hair salons, libraries, museums, personal wellness services and restaurants across the province were forced to close, while outdoor social gatherings were banned and masks were made mandatory across the province.

Shopping malls, retail and places of worship had to reduce to 15 per cent of their fire code capacity.

Originally the measures were slated to be in place until at least Jan. 12, but will be re-evaluated in the coming weeks.
