Annual Library Con event takes place in Lac La Biche

Most people who are in the process of being abducted by aliens would be scared out of their wits, but Cynthia Laboucane found the experience quite humorous. And while at first glance it might appear as though she is being carried off by an extraterrestrial (or somebody dressed as one), that’s actually her inside the costume. Chris McGarry photo.

Saturday’s Library Con event at Stuart MacPherson Public Library in Lac La Biche also included craft and vendor booths run by local artisans, who mingled with those attending the event and sold their creations. Tammy Doonanco and her daughter, Nevaeh, were representing their home-based business, T.P. Freeze Drying and Sour Dough, which makes freeze dried candy, fruits, and vegetables, as well as sourdough. Many popular fandoms were on display at this year’s Library Con, including Star Wars and the Terminator series. Charisse Nicholls was dressed as Padma Amadalla, who in the Star Wars franchise was married to Anakin Skywalker, who later became Darth Vader, while Laney Smith was the killer cyborg from the Terminator series. May the Force be with you! The Star Wars universe was a popular theme at this year’s Library Con. LAC LA BICHE - For a few hours on Jan. 6, the Stuart MacPherson Library in Lac La Biche felt like a science-fiction movie or a comic book creation.

The change was thanks to the ninth annual Library Con event.

This year’s Library Con, was a four-hour event that offered a variety of sci-fi and fantasy-related activities, including a costume and sci-fi video contest, laser tag, a Space Travel Quest, an opportunity to get pictures taken in an alien-themed photo booth, as well as crafts for children and teenagers.

Throughout the afternoon, library staff and visitors were dressed in costumes representing a variety of fandoms, including Star Wars, the Terminator, and characters from the Marvel Universe. There were also craft and vendor booths where local artisans mingled with those passing by and sold their creations.

The free family event brings a taste of Comic Con to the community, and allows people to meet others with similar interests.

The annual Library Con is one of the several events hosted at the Lac La Biche and Plamondon libraries throughout the year.
