Young Susanna catches some cool water in a bucket during a family visit to the Paul Richard Memorial splash park in Lac La Biche this week. While the youngster enjoyed the feel of water drops, most residents won't see actual raindrops until Sunday, says Environment Canada.
Water at the water. The lakeside splash park in McArthur Park has been a busy location to beat the heat this week. Record-breaking temperatures are expected to remain in the 30s until at least Sunday.

Families from across the region have been making a splash at Lac La Biche's Paul Richard Memorial Spray Park this week as scorching temperatures have smashed historical weather records.

Trying to beat the heat with cool water features and a little bit of a breeze from the lake at McArthur Park has drawn hundreds of visits this week.

The heat wave that has covered much of North America, but in particular the Western provinces and northwestern United States, has put temperatures in the Lakeland region into the mid and high 30s all week. The weather has also produced no precipitation for more than a week.

Record-breaker

With an Environment Canada Heat Warning still in effect for the region, temperatures on Wednesday are expected to be the hottest of the week, climbing through the daytime, to peak at more than 36 degrees at 6:30 pm. The record high temperature for the same day was 28.9 degrees Celsius in 2008.

The week of record-breaking temperatures is slated to slowly return to normal by this Sunday, with Environment Canada forecasting a chance of rain and daytime high temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius.

Before that rain comes down, hundreds more people are likely to feel the water spray at the splash park.
