Lac La Biche golfers sidelined by water hazard

A sign at the course two weeks ago listed the precautions of a re-opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now course officials are dealing with a total course closure due to Mother Nature.

Prolonged rain over the last week has forced the course closure at the Lac La Biche Golf Club due to flooding and drainage issues.

"The water we are accumulating and being the main source of drainage for a lot of the surrounding area around the golf course is creating havoc on the course," said Lac La Biche Golf Club pro Lance Palamaruk on Sunday.

The course is expected to remain closed until at least Tuesday.

Calling it a "water situation," course officials say the fairways will remain closed until rain hat has been blanketing the region for a week eases up.

"If this rain subsides, we will try to be open Tuesday but we will update you when we know," Palamaruk said. "If things change quickly for the better, we will get word out as soon as possible."

Staff will be at the clubhouse during the course closure to answer phone calls and give updates on the rain delay.

The notice of closure comes just three weeks after the local golf course's delayed season opening after being forced to remain closed due to protocols in the coronavirus pandemic.
