Memorial benches can bring comfort

LAC LA BICHE - Loved ones — and even strangers — can share some space and scenic views with area residents who have passed, thanks to a new memorial bench program being offered in Lac La Biche County.

Residents and visitors looking for a little sit-down rest while walking some of the trails and park-spaces in the county have likely seen the new memorial markers. Some permanent benches in McArthur Park currently carry the plaques of area residents who have recently passed. The plaques feature an image, name and dates of their life, and a short poem or description.

The benches and plaques are available for purchase through the municipality. The benches can be placed and secured in outdoor public areas across the municipality.

"If a person or group wants to dedicate a bench, they can reach out to the County," said Lac La Biche County spokesperson Jihad Moghrabi. "We meet with them to review where they would like the bench—we have many throughout the County — not just at McArthur Place."

The charge for the lasting memorial is $1,000, which Moghrabi says is  break-even on the bench and install.

The family, person or group requesting the memorial bench supplies the plaque which is purchased from a dedicated supplier to keep uniformity in size and design. More information on the bench program can be found through a link in the digital version of this story at www.lakelandtoday.ca
