The St. Paul Junior Curling Club had its annual windup bonspiel on Feb. 13 with 12 teams participating – six in the 11 and under category and another six teams in the 14 and under category.

Eight of the teams came from St. Paul, one from Myrnam, another from Two Hills, and two traveled from Plamondon to participate.

For the 11 and under category, the high score went to skip Chelsey Landiak and her teammates Sarah Faucher, Benjamin Jacque and Zoe Ainsworth with 21 points.

For the second spot, it was a shootout between Tiana Tymko’s team against a team skipped by Emily Smid after both teams were tied at 19 points, in which Smid’s team came up as the winner.

Meanwhile, Andre Tardiff and his team from Plamondon took top spot with 34 points, while Bailey Shandro and his team from Two Hills took second spot with 27 points in the 14 and under category,

Both categories also had the opportunity for a shootout to the button, with Kayleigh Zacharuk taking top spot in the 11 and under category after placing her stone 22 inches away from the button, followed by Emily Smid’s attempt which came to 33 inches.

In the 14 and under category, Baxter Bailey had a phenomenal two and a half inches away from the button while Seanna Richard placed hers at nine inches.

Winners of the shootout for the button won uncirculated coins as special prizes, according to club coordinator Alice Tymofichuk-Betton.

Tymofichuk-Betton has been involved with the club for seven years. She didn’t start curling herself until she was 46 years old.

The avid curler said the purpose of the bonspiel is to encourage young curlers to enjoy the sport.

“We’re encouraging fun and participation so they have a great day,” said Tymofichuk-Betton, adding that the club has seven to eight volunteers every Wednesday to help out the young curlers on ice.

“The children that we had this year is just an awesome bunch … I don’t think you can find better young people than these,” she added.
