The coffee shop talk is about to get very political

They’re looking for Joe Public … and a good cup of coffee.

They’re looking for Joe Public … and a good cup of coffee.

On Wednesday local MLA Ray Danyluk will be in Lac La Biche with Alberta Human Services Minister Dave Hancock for what Danyluk’s constituency office staff are calling a chance to speak with his constituents at a grassroots level.

Danyluk, the minister of Infrastructure, and Hancock will spend the morning in local coffee shops meeting and greeting anyone who wants to stir up a conversation while they stir in sugar and creamer. The two politicians will be spending all day in the Lac La Biche area, with a lunch at the Heritage Centre, as well as meetings and drop ins at the Provincial Building, Hope Haven Women’s Shelter, the Alberta Job Corps. offices and the Lac La Biche Canadian Native Friendship Centre.

The tour will wrap up in the early evening at the Bold Center where a buffet supper will be served by local Youth Achievement Program (YAP) students from Dr. Swift Middle School from 5- 6 p.m. Following the supper, which is being offered in the upper lounge area at the Bold Center for a $25 fee, the ministers will be available for more community questions until 7 p.m.

Although it could be seen as an indication the Tory government’s election campaign machine is starting up, Danyluk’s office staff are saying it is more of a low-key, all-day opportunity for the average citizen to visit with two of their government members. Similar tours by other government ministers are planned in communities across the province in the coming weeks.

In a Calgary Herald story from last Friday, Rob Anderson, the finance critic for the Wildrose party, called the decision to hold the cabinet tour weeks before an election call "incredible."

"There's an election coming up in the next couple of months. So to use taxpayer money to go on this tour is just a joke," said the Airdrie MLA.

A similar blitz-tour of government ministers was held last year at the same time.
