Fatal residential fire in Saddle Lake on Wednesday

SADDLE LAKE - A person was found deceased following a fire in Saddle Lake Cree Nation on Wednesday. 

Police discovered the fire while doing proactive patrols in the community, Jan. 31. RCMP noted flames coming from inside a residence located along Highway 36 could be seen.

"RCMP attended, as well as the Saddle Lake Fire Services and EMS. Upon arrival, the residence was found fully engulfed and deemed unfit for entry," according to information from RCMP. Police discovered the fire at about 12:05 p.m.

"Once the fire was extinguished, human remains were discovered within the residence."

Police are in the early stages of the investigation and are being helped by the Alberta Medical Examiners Office and the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit.

"After preliminary investigation, the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature," according to police.

RCMP offer condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
