SADDLE LAKE - Saddle Lake Cree Nation has confirmed the passing of Chief Terry Cardinal.

Cardinal was elected as chief in 2022. He was 68 years old at this time of his passing.

"It is with heavy hearts that the council of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation announces the passing of our beloved Chief Terry Cardinal," reads a statement from the Nation, signed by Bonnie White, the Chief's executive assistant, on behalf of the rest of council.

"He was a great leader, well respected, and deeply loved by all who knew him," reads the letter.

Condolences were offered to Cardinal's family, and the entire Nation, "all of those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. His legacy will forever live on in our hearts and in our Nation where he served with dedication and passion."

Cardinal's life was honoured on April 1 and 2, with a wake taking place, followed by a funeral that is set for April 3.
