RED DEER, Alta. — Mounties in central Alberta say they will not be charging a homeowner who shot and killed an intruder who broke into his home and beat him with a baseball bat.

Blackfalds RCMP say in a news release that when officers got to the home Monday in Red Deer County, they found the homeowner bleeding and a man dead with a gunshot wound.

They say witnesses told officers that the man had broken into the home and was found sleeping in a bed.

There was a confrontation and the intruder struck the homeowner several times with the bat.

Police say during the attack, the homeowner grabbed a gun and shot the man once.

They say that after consulting with Crown prosecutors, the decision was made not to lay charges.
