EDMONTON — Alberta says it's time to start moving on from the COVID-19 pandemic because the province's decision to ease measures does not appear to have caused an uptick in hospitalizations.

Health Minister Jason Copping says as part of the change the United Conservative government will only update data on its website once a week.

The province reported 593 new cases on Wednesday.

Chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, says 989 people are in hospital with the infection, including 70 in intensive care.

Copping says both figures are down by about 40 per cent since Alberta began easing measures in early February.

The province also adjusted the total number of deaths from the virus to 4,013 -- a net decrease of 12 -- after an earlier reporting error.
