RCMP lift shelter advisory in Alberta after they allege officers were shot at

HIGH PRAIRIE, Alta. — RCMP have lifted a warning for people in a northern Alberta community to shelter at home with their doors locked after they allege officers were shot at while responding to an early-morning traffic complaint.

Mounties say in a news release that officers responded to the complaint in High Prairie around 2 a.m. Sunday which resulted in shots being fired at police, although they say no officers were injured.

Police say the vehicle was recovered abandoned at the Elk Rodeo Grounds in High Prairie with several firearms inside, and that they believed three suspects fled to JayCee Park.

At about 4 a.m., RCMP emailed a news release that there was an "active police event" underway in High Prairie and that people should avoid the northwest part of the community, specifically the park and the rodeo grounds.

Police also advised residents to stay home, lock their doors and shelter in place.

At around noon, police issued an advisory that all three suspects had been apprehended and were in custody, and that there was no longer a risk to public safety.
