The province is fast-tracking the delivery of several school projects across Alberta.
On Wednesday, the province announced that 11 previously approved projects will see shovels in the ground sooner than anticipated and in turn will deliver more than 8,000 new and updated student spaces.
The sped-up construction will be seen in several areas across Alberta, including Calgary, Coalhurst, Donnelly, Falher, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie County, Lac La Biche, Red Deer, Strathmore and Wetaskiwin.
“We are building more schools at a faster rate, never before seen in Alberta," Minister of Education and Childcare Demetrios Nicolaides said.
Last fall the Alberta government made a commitment of $8.6 billion to help speed up the construction, renovation and building of more than 100 schools across the province.
Since the initial announcement, 33 school projects have been approved to move forward to the next steps of the construction process, which brings the total of active school projects in Alberta to 132.
“Alberta’s government is delivering on our commitment to build vibrant, high-quality learning environments for students across the province," said Martin Long, Minister of Infrastructure. "By accelerating school construction and expanding modular classroom capacity, we’re making sure families in growing communities have access to the education spaces they need – now and into the future.”
The government is also investing $50 million into providing modular classrooms for 19 school boards. This funding will allow for 50 modular classrooms to be built and 19 current ones to be located.
The $50 million investment adds to the $140 million invested in modular classrooms in 2024.
