A Cochrane and Bragg Creek connection to the Calgary Stampede can be viewed at the BMO Centre from July 4 to 13 as the work of some of the best photographers in Canada will be on display in an exhibit that features photographs captured by members of Team Canada’s World Photographic Cup (WPC) team.
Bragg Creek photographer Rachel Ross and Cochrane photographer Jacquie Matechuk are two of a handful of photographers and digital illustrators whose work will be on display at the exhibit during the Stampede. The display features the images that represented Team Canada at this years WPC.
Rachel Ross, a photographer from Bragg Creek, has an image on display at the exhibit–a stunning portrait of the aurora borealis rising above the Rocky Mountains.
Matechuk’s image of a “mist-clad” spectacled bear in the Andean Mountains of Argentina is so artistically captured that it looks as if it could be a painting.
The WPC, referred to as the “Olympics of photography”, is a prestigious global competition that serves as the “ultimate arena” for photographers to compete as a team and showcase their talent on an international stage.
Matechuk, a member of the Route 22 Artist Collective Gallery, is joined on Team Canada’s WPC squad by Jo-Anne Oucharek, the president of Route 22.
A press release from WPC Team Canada states that six of the photographs that are on display at the BMO Centre placed within the top 10 at the WPC with an image captured by Nick Didlick at the Paris Olympics of Kayak Cross, that won a gold medal at the WPC.
"Canada is such a large and diverse country, and to be chosen as a representative from all our talented photographers is a distinct honour,” said Didlick in a WPC press release.
“In addition to the outstanding photographs submitted by Team Canada you will experience the remarkable works from past Canadian World Medalists. Don’t miss the chance to celebrate Canadian talent up close,” wrote WPC Team Canada in a statement.
Stampede-goers can view the images that made “Canada proud as the exhibition stops in Calgary. Experience our nation's spirit of creativity and excellence through this striking collection of world-class photographs,” the statement concluded.
