CALGARY — The City of Calgary says it will make an important announcement alongside its partners this afternoon about a future event centre.

It says in a news release that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, the Calgary Sport and Entertainment Corporation and the Calgary Stampede will participate in the event.

It comes less than a week before the writ is to drop for the May provincial election.

Smith has stated her support for a new arena in Calgary to house the National Hockey League's Flames and wanted the province to get involved.

She said last October that the Saddledome has served the community well, but can no longer compete with new buildings across North America for events, concerts and sports.

Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation and the city restarted talks last year on a new event centre after a previous agreement collapsed a year earlier.
