ST. ALBERT - The City of St. Albert announced this week that electric vehicle drivers have 18 new charging stations to use throughout the city.
The new charging station locations include St. Albert Place, which has six new level two chargers; Servus Place, which has eight new level two chargers; and the remaining four new stations are at the Nakî Transit Centre.
A 'level two' charging station charges vehicles substantially faster than standard, level one chargers.
“We’re excited to offer our residents and visitors more electric vehicle charging stations throughout St. Albert as we kick off summer 2023,” Mayor Cathy Heron said in a June 29 news release.
“The City of St. Albert would also like to thank the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), the Government of Alberta and Natural Resources Canada for making these new stations possible through MCCAC's Electric Vehicle Charging Program.”
“Having these 18 charging stations come online directly showcases the City of St. Albert’s commitment to electrify local tourism and attract (electric vehicle) drivers from across the region as we also find innovative ways to protect our environment for future generations,” Heron said.
The city's news release says the funding received for the new charging stations from the MCCAC totalled about $190,000, which covered the “vast majority of total project costs.”
“This funding is in the form of a rebate that will be received once all EV charging stations have been installed,” the release says.
The city's news release also says an additional six charging stations will be unveiled at Fountain Park Pool when the recreation facility re-opens next month.
The new charging stations add to the city's existing electric vehicle infrastructure, such as the two charging stations located at Fire Hall No. 1 on Gate Avenue, and the lone charging station located at the St. Albert Business Centre on Sir Winston Churchill Avenue.
“Interested motorists can use these locations as well as download Plugshare or ChargeHub to find charging locations throughout St. Albert,” the city's news release says.
“All City-run (electric vehicle) chargers will be pay-for-use and will charge $1.50 an hour of charging except for the station behind St. Albert Business Centre which is currently free to charge.”
