Driver accused in highway crash same man charged in 2021 hit-and-run death

Man in serious collision last week in Ontario was charged last year with careless driving causing death after a woman was hit and killed.

A dump-truck driver charged after a serious collision last week on Highway 17 is the same man charged in connection with the hit-and-run death of a female pedestrian last year.

Charles McMillan, also known as Chuck McMillan, was charged by Ontario Provincial Police last week after the dump truck he was driving collided with an S&T Group work van on the morning of July 22.

McMillan was charged with multiple offences, including careless driving, driving a commercial vehicle with no license, and notice of drivers licence suspension for operating a commercial motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration above zero.

The driver of the S&T van was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

SooToday has confirmed through public court documents that McMillan is the same driver who was charged after a woman was hit and killed on Second Line West on May 27, 2021. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service never released his name to the media, even after he was charged.

SooToday reached out to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service on Thursday to ask why McMillan’s name was not publicly released. The police have yet to respond to that request.

The company that employs McMillan, FKM Trucking, has also been charged in connection with the July 22 collision: one count of permitting an unlicensed person to drive a commercial vehicle. A notice on McMillan’s Facebook page says he has been working for the company since 1998.

SooToday reached out to FKM Trucking for comment on Wednesday to ask why McMillan was allowed to continue driving for the company, but did not receive a response.

McMillan was formally charged with careless driving causing death on June 24, 2021, almost a full month after the collision that killed the woman on Second Line West, near Brunswick Avenue. That matter is still before the court, with McMillan’s next appearance scheduled for Aug. 10.
