Local voters took to the polls and re-elected Conservative David Yurdiga as Fort McMurray-Cold Lake MP.

"I'm really thrilled. It's amazing that the people put their faith back into me. I'm going to work hard to make sure our riding gets its fair share of funding," he said following the win. "Words can't describe how grateful I am to all of the people who came out and supported me."

Yurdiga is entering his second full term as MP. He also served a partial term in 2014 after Brian Jean stepped down.

Yurdiga celebrated his success at the Lakeland Inn in Cold Lake surrounded by family and friends.

Popping champagne, he took a moment to thank those who supported him throughout the campaign.

Looking ahead, Yurdiga has plans to continue pushing for Motion 192, which would have Canadian legislation reviewed and altered to better accommodate those living with episodic diseases.

"We have a lot of things on our plate that I was working on prior (to the election)," Yurdiga detailed.

For example, there's a company that has shown interest in building a research centre in Fort McMurray, advocating for pipelines, and brainstorming ways to address rural crime.

When asked what challenges his party could face with a Liberal minority government, Yurdiga said it all comes down to whether or not a coalition government is formed.

"With the NDP, you never know which way it's going to go, because they're very negative towards any pipeline. Obviously we need to twin the pipeline and get our oil to international markets, so the concern is a coalition. If there is one, it's going to really hurt Albertans."

Also in the running for Fort McMurray-Cold Lake MP were Liberal Maggie Farrington, People's Party of Canada candidate Matthew Barrett, Brian Deheer from the Green Party, and NDP Matthew Gilks.
