The Village of Glendon has passed their interim budget for 2019.

The park featuring the World's Largest Pyrogy is about to get a major makeover.

Over $200,000 worth of upgrades is being planned for Glendon's Pyrogy Park, with Village administration hoping to make it the focal point of community.

"We want to make this an inviting tourist destination that can be utilized by our residents and tourists a like," said Mayor Laura Papirny.

Papirny and Village CAO Melody Kwiatkowski approached the MD of Bonnyville Council on Aug. 26 to ask for $100,000 to help with their project.

A series of phases have been established for the park revitalization, with village officials hoping to build a playground, a gazebo, bathrooms, benches and a skating rink.

"We are trying to get this park to be nice again," said Papirny. "We want this to be a beautiful place."

The Village has already built a cement pad in the middle of the park, which they will transform into a skating rink in the winter and a skateboard park in the summer.

The next phase will see the community build a new playground to replace the small, outdated playground equipment currently in the park.

So far the Glendon Parks and Playground Society has raised around $40,000, which will be used to purchase the new equipment.

Council has also applied for the Community Facility Enhancement Program grant from Alberta Culture and Tourism in hopes of receiving $56,500 to help with the upgrades.

Papirny received a welcoming response from council, who felt that the giant pyrogy is one of the more popular attractions in the region.

"I think it is a really great idea," said Coun. Dana Swigart. "I know that people drive from all over the country to Glendon to see the big pyrogy. It does need some livening up."

Council plans to debate the issue over the coming weeks and is expected to make a decision on whether or not to offer any monetary support at their Sept. 8 regular council meeting.
