OLDS – Republican Party of Alberta candidate Cam Davies says an independent Alberta would be best for residents in the district and across the province.
Davies is seeking election in the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills by-election, which takes place on June 23. He is seeking election to public office for the first time.
The Republican Party of Alberta used to be the Buffalo Party before being rebranded and renamed in February. Davies has been involved as leader of the provincial party since the end of April.
The party is advocating for a province-wide binding independence referendum on the question of separation from Canada.
“I’m the only candidate who believes that we are not getting a fair deal within Canada and we’ve had enough with strongly worded letters and lawsuits and it’s time for action,” said Davies told the Albertan.
“We need to send a strong message to Ottawa that we’ve had enough. We need a binding referendum on seeking a new path for Alberta as an independent sovereign nation.”
The provincial government can call a referendum at any time, he said.
“They don’t need petitions. They don’t need signatures. They just need a little backbone and listen to Albertans and do the right thing and schedule a referendum,” he said.
If elected in the riding, Davies said he would be a “tireless voice to advocate that this government, that is quickly growing out of touch with Albertans, should wake up and smell the coffee and listen for once. There is a growing number of Albertans who want a vote on this.”
If elected, Davies said he would advocate for the oilpatch and other industries in the district.
“It is absolutely critical that we stop allowing Ottawa to dictate how we earn a living,” he said.
“I will be a voice for the agricultural industry, our oil and gas industry, our manufacturing industry, and every resident of Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills.”
As an MLA Davies said he would push for Ottawa to do more to fight Chinese tariffs on agricultural products.
Residents in the riding have been telling him that they are “tired of the UCP arrogance, corruption and entitlement.”
“Residents in Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills feel that their voices are taken for granted,” he added. “There is extreme frustration that the UCP is not listening to the will of the people, especially in regard to parental rights and medical rights and freedoms.”
The Republican Party of Alberta is not affiliated in any way with the Republican Party in the U.S., he said.
