Four Cold Lake students are being recognized as Leaders of Tomorrow.

Jennifer Green, Ammon Kozlow, Jordan Mattice, and Arielle Hiar, all from Assumption Jr./Sr. High School, were chosen to receive this year's Osum Leader of Tomorrow Award.

The $1,000 bursary was designed to recognize students for their outstanding leadership qualities and commitment to their community.

Assumption academic and career counselor Lynne Vining put forward nominations for two of the award recipients.

Green was one of those students. In addition to academic excellence, she has been deeply involved with extracurricular activities both in and out of school.

In her nomination letter, Vining noted that she has excelled in the fine arts through her participation in the school band, speech competitions, and annual musicals. Green has been active in a number of fundraising initiatives for charities such as the food bank and the local Habitat for Humanity project. Vining, as well as LCSD education technology coach Colleen Yoshida, nominated Kozlow for the award.

A well-rounded student, Kozlow had the highest academic average in his graduating class and was a dominant competitor in many athletic events, including track and field. In addition to academics and athletics, Kozlow is the co-president of the Assumption student council and spent his free time volunteering with community groups like Scouts.

"It was such a great feeling to see (them win). They're both fantastic kids and they're more than deserving of the award, so it was wonderful to see that they're being recognized for all of they're hard work," said Vining, of Green and Kozlow.

The second student Yoshida nominated for the awarded was Mattice. A leader and mentor athletically, one of Mattice's major accomplishments was the remediation of the old walking trail along Lakeshore Drive in Cold Lake north.

He took it upon himself to fix up the trail for the betterment of the community, allowing other residents to walk further down the pathway and enjoy the nature.

"I was super proud of (Ammon and Jordan). They're awesome kids and it's just nice to see them get the kudos they deserve," said Yoshida. "The Leader of Tomorrow awards were a good fit for both of them."

Hiar, the fourth Assumption studentto receive a Leader of Tomorrow Award, was nominated by Holy Cross Elementary teacher NadineFriesen - whose French immersion kindergarten class Hiar volunteered in.

"She was my student in Grade 1. You see her growing and then she comes into my class to volunteer and then, suddenly, there you are, I'm nominating her for her volunteer work and the good she does in the community," said Friesen. "She's always there to help. I thought she deserves this."

In addition to lending a hand in younger grades, Hiar has a passion for musical theatre and helps with the younger classes at Pirouette School of Dance.

The Leaders of Tomorrow were presented with their awards at the Beantrees Café on June 28.
