A man is dead after his vehicle got stuck in the snow in Abbotsford and he was struck by a snowplow.

"We offer condolences to all those impacted by this incident as this is a very tragic situation all around," says Const. Art Stele with the Abbotsford Police Department.

Officers responded to the scene at 6:16 a.m. on Thursday near North Parallel Road and Fooks Road.

Police believe the man was driving along Highway 1 when his vehicle veered off the road. The vehicle got stuck so the man decided to walk along North Parallel Road towards a gas station.

He was struck by the driver of a snowplow while he was walking, police say.

The snowplow was privately contracted and privately owned. It was not a city vehicle.

The 31-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon.

Stele says the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

"Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, with inclement weather and snow likely being contributing factors,” says Stele.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the crash and have closed North Parallel Road between Whatcom Road and Kilgard Road.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has video footage is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225
