With age comes wisdom, but for many, also comes a more restrictive income. Seniors (often classified 65+, but in some places it’s lower) often have retired, which means they are running on a fixed income from their retirement funds, Old Age Security, or other benefits. However, there are many businesses that offer discounts for seniors, and there’s no reason for you to not take advantage of this; you have earned it! For those in Alberta, there are a lot of different places that offer discounts, from retail stores, to public transit. Below is just a fraction of the discounts you can enjoy.

Banking

Since you are retired, or nearing retirement as a senior, you want to be taking care of your money better and taking advantage of banking savings to reduce your expenses. Most banks in Canada, and most credit unions, offer discounts for seniors on accounts that you have with them. For example, TD Bank offers Everyday Banking accounts to seniors with no fees, and they also have various other senior specific accounts with discounts.

Travel

If you are no longer able to drive everywhere in the city anymore, whether it’s due to health concerns or you just don’t want to deal with traffic, most major cities offer discounts to public transit cards for seniors. Calgary offers two levels, a Senior Regular pass, and a Senior Low Income pass, both prices available here. Edmonton's transit pricing is listed here.

For long distance travel, VIA Rail offers discounts to those 60+, and even has a deal with Amtrak for a similar discount if travelling across the border.

Retail

There are dozens of retail stores that offer discounts for seniors. If in doubt, you can always ask a store employee or at the cash register if they offer a seniors card or discount. Some retailers that offer discounts include: Value Village, 30%; Shoppers Drug Mart, 20%; McDonalds, 20%; Rexall, 20%; Pet Value, 10%. For the latest discounts, contact the store directly, or visit their online site.

Parks and Recreation

If you are an avid enjoyer of destination trips, such as camping, you are also in luck with many national and provincial parks offering discounts for seniors. As per Alberta Parks FAQ, seniors can receive a discount at a variety of campgrounds.

Many events held in the province, if they have an entry fee, will offer a seniors discount. Check the event promoter’s website for details.

Other Discounts

Various stores have loyalty cards, such as the PC Optimum card. If you are a CAA member, you often enjoy discounts at various locations and services, and it isn’t age limited, so try it out!

Looking for discounts is a money-wise decision. Never feel shame for asking for a seniors discount. Just remember to bring your proof of identity to show that you are a senior. You might not feel like a senior, but you may as well take advantage of the perks!
