Part 3 – Alberta Motorcycle Adventures - The Open Road is Calling!

When the days turn warm and the open road calls, vehicles must share the road with motorcycles. It’s an interesting dynamic that, without understanding on both sides, can result in tension. This three part series takes a look at the story behind Edmonton’s ghost bike program, rider safety for real-life situations, and concludes with a popular road trip filled with destinations that warmly welcome members of the bike community.

The call of the open road is irresistible when summer arrives, and Alberta’s highways and byways offer some of the most scenic and thrilling motorcycle routes in Canada. Whether you’re planning a quick day trip, a weekend getaway, or a month-long adventure, Alberta has something for every rider. Here are some must-visit destinations and routes to add to your summer riding itinerary.

Sunnybrook, Alberta: A Hidden Gem

Sunnybrook is a small but vibrant community that’s a favourite among riders. The Sunnybrook Hotel & Bar is a must-stop for a hearty meal and a refreshing drink. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and rustic charm, it’s the perfect place to refuel and connect with fellow riders.

The Four Lakes Loop

For riders who crave a mix of winding roads and breathtaking views, the Four Lakes Loop is a dream come true. This route takes you through forests, by lakes, and through rolling hills, offering plenty of opportunities to stop and soak in the scenery. As it starts in Spruce Grove and winds its way to Alberta Beach, there are plenty of places to stop for a bite or a pit stop. This 2.5 hour loop is close to Edmonton, making it a great single-day ride for Capital City locals, but Alberta Beach is also a popular spot to stay overnight in a village known for catering to summer guests, so why not make a weekend out of it?

Sylvan Lake Tour - Ride and Relax

Whether you are in a car or on two wheels, Sylvan Lake is practically designed for a laid back road trip. The town boasts four pit stops that combine art, culture, and nature. Don’t overlook the famous lake and be sure to grab an ice cream treat at Big Moo!

Sheep Falls: The Rugged Route

With a starting point near Bragg Creek, the Sheep Falls route has twisty roads for experienced riders, along with the option of safely turning around at the end point and not having to loop back on a major highway. There are plenty of places on the way to grab some pizza or a soda, or to stop and take a picture. “Okotoks Erratic” is on this route and is a very popular stop during the ride.

Before you hit the road, remember to prioritize safety. Take a refresher course if needed, wear proper gear, and always share the road responsibly. Let’s make this summer a season of unforgettable rides and safe travels.
