We all know Alberta summers are the best of the best. The days are long, the skies are big, and there’s no shortage of ways to get outside and soak it all in. But let’s be honest, they also come with a reputation for being scorching hot and dry as a bone. So when the temperature spikes and you're looking for a way to cool down that doesn't involve cranking the AC or standing in line at a packed city pool, we've got just the thing.

Welcome to Discovery Canyon

Tucked away in the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, Discovery Canyon is Red Deer’s best-kept summer secret. It's a hidden gem that delivers maximum fun without putting a dent in your wallet. This natural water park offers a unique blend of lazy river tubing, splash zones, sandy beaches, and family-friendly amenities, all set against a backdrop of natural beauty.

At the heart of the park is a gently sloped, naturally fed tubing course powered by the Red Deer River. The flow is calm, the water is shallow at around 2.5 feet, and the vibe is pure summer. It's perfect for kids, first-time floaters, or anyone looking to kick back and let the current do the work. Bring your own tube between 30 and 50 inches, open bottom only, or rent one on site for just six bucks through a simple wristband system. Once you reach the bottom, you’ll land at a sandy beach and wading pool where little ones can splash safely and everyone can hang out before heading back up for another round.

But tubing is just the beginning. Discovery Canyon is packed with shaded picnic areas, grassy spots to lounge, a nature-themed playground, and a concession stand stocked with summer treats and ice cream. With clean, accessible washrooms and change rooms on site, you can stay all day and stay comfortable while you do it.

Where to Find It

Discovery Canyon is located just 3.5 kilometres north of the 30 Avenue and 67 Street roundabout, in the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area at 3800 River Bend Drive. There’s plenty of free parking right on site, and the park is easy to get to whether you're coming from Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton, or anywhere in between. It's the kind of day trip that feels like a mini vacation without all the effort.

What to Know Before You Go

Admission is completely free, which is almost unheard of these days for a full on water park experience. Tube rentals are just six dollars per person, making it an affordable outing for families, friend groups, or solo adventurers looking for something different.

The park is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., typically from June 1 through September 1, depending on the weather. While there are no lifeguards on duty, the calm, shallow water keeps it beginner-friendly. Just make sure kids are supervised at all times. Dogs are not allowed in the park, so you’ll want to leave your furry friends at home.

Why Discovery Canyon Is Worth It

Discovery Canyon consistently gets praise for its clean facilities, friendly atmosphere, and laid-back vibe. The float may be short, usually between two and five minutes, but with unlimited runs and plenty of room to stretch out in between, you can make a whole day of it.

In a province full of wild landscapes and outdoor adventures, Discovery Canyon is something a little different. It's a place where families can laugh, float, and play without spending a fortune. So pack a picnic, grab your tube, and get ready to make the most of summer in the best way possible.
