RCMP nab suspended driver on Buffalo Lake highway

Loaded shotgun found in vehicle pulled over on Hwy 855

A Smoky Lake resident will be in Boyle Provincial Court this week, facing several offences, including careless use of a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime and driving a vehicle without insurance.

Boyle RCMP laid charges against Rory Patrick Bazinet, 39, of Smoky Lake on July 1 during an afternoon traffic stop on Highway 855 near the Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement.

Police say the traffic stop was made after officers spotted a vehicle travelling along the roadway that connects Highways 663 and 28 with licence plates that didn't match the make and model of the vehicle.

The roadside stop and resulting investigation resulted in a number of additional charges after police say they learned the driver was under a driving suspension and was wanted on two Criminal Code arrest warrants. Police also say their investigation located a loaded shotgun in the vehicle — and determined the vehicle had been stolen from Edmonton.

Bazinet is facing a total of nine charges, including careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm while unauthorized, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, as well as driving and alcohol tickets including driving while unauthorized, improper use of a license plate, driving an uninsured vehicle, operating a vehicle without registration and transporting liquor within access of an occupant.

Bazinet was released from custody on conditions to appear in Boyle Provincial Court on July 27.
