The Ashmont Falcons senior boys basketball team defeated Glendon 73 - 69 last night in SPAA playoffs to earn a spot in the provincial zones tournament this weekend in Cold Lake.

Right off the tip off both teams played with intensity resulting in the two sides trading baskets all first quarter, which ended with the Falcons holding a 23 - 18 lead.

The high pace continued into second quarter, and at the end of the first half the teams were level at 41 points.

It wasn't until about mid way through the fourth quarter did the Falcons finally build a six point lead. Glendon battled back to narrow it to three points and with little time left on the clock failed to tie it. Ashmont added some insurance as the final buzzer sounded to win the game.

"It was pretty intense from start to finish," Falcons coach Tim Yakiwchuk said after the game. "These are definitely the two strongest teams for this zone."

"We had a little bit of trouble with turnovers, but defensive rebounding was really good for us today," he added.

Ashmont will now head to Cold Lake to compete in the zones tournament in Cold Lake with its first game against Kitscoty on Friday.

The Ashmont girls will take on St. Paul Regional High School for the championship on Wednesday.
