Despite the score, Bandits head coach Dan Jubinville said his defence really stepped up this week. “(Our defence is) coming together…they are seeing and reacting to the ball well.” The Bonnyville Bandits lost to the Cold Lake Royals last Saturday by a score of 38-8.

The score may appear one-sided but the game told a different story. The Royals were up early, scoring a few quick touchdowns, going up 30-0 at half time.

But the second half saw the Bandits defence hold the line on several occasions. Jubinville was impressed with the number of goal-line stands his defence made. They managed to hold the Royals to one touchdown in the second half.

The Bandits offence tried to make it close with a few long drives and some nice completed plays, but it was too little, too late.

They did manage one successful drive down the field, with full back Michael Zelisko pushing it in from a few yards out for the touchdown.

Then on the two-point attempt, quarterback Gregory Godziuk ran a naked bootleg around the outside for the two-point conversion.

“They did a good job getting up the field,” said Jubinville.

The Bandits appear to be having more fun out there as the season goes on and they have had a little more success. Jubinville said his players “have very good camaraderie…their spirits are up.”

The coach plans to focus on getting more penetration up the middle from his defence and to keep working on passing from his offence at this week's practices.

Next week's game goes against the Lloydminster Chargers. Jubinville said, “It should be an interesting game, they have a few strong players.” But he added, if the Bandits can key in on those strong players, his team should do fine.

The game goes at Walsh Field, with kick off at 1 p.m.
