Lac La Biche County announced earlier this month that it is set to open the Lac La Biche Sports Hall of Fame in the Bold Center after receiving its first set of nominations.

Up to 10 nominees will be inducted into the Hall of Fame each year, with winners getting a picture of themselves and a biography under their name, while some will be honoured with on an inspirational wall located inside the centre.

There will be three categories - athlete, builder and team - that those inducted into the hall of fame can be nominated for. Entrants can have competed in any sport as well as multiple sports, but inductees must have competed in their sports for at least 10 years. Athletes must have lived in the county at some point, while builders had to have done their service for at least 10 years in Lac La Biche County.

Teams must have been based in Lac La Biche County, be comprised of the-residents of the county, and won either a national, international or world championship.

Darrell Lessmeister, senior recreation manager at the county, thinks the hall of fame will an impact even beyond acknowledging the past.

“We have a vibrant sporting community that we ought to be proud of,” he said in a county statement. “As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles, we want to acknowledge and celebrate people’ s accomplishments.”

The possibility of a local athletics hall of fame was been debated in council during the last budget season.

Nominations will be open until Oct. 1. The nomination forms can be found here.
