After a strong first round of playoffs, the St. Paul Jr. B Canadiens now find themselves down two games in the second round after meeting with Killam over the weekend.
The first game on Friday, head coach Joe Young says the team played “alright,” but, “Alright just doesn’t cut it.” He said Killam clearly was excited to be playing at home for game 1 of the second round, and the Canadiens did manage to get some momentum in the second and third periods, but at that point, that game was already over.
The final score of the game was 5-0 for the Wheat Kings.
On Saturday, the teams met up again, and the storyline was a little different.
Although Killam came out to a 2-0 lead in the first, the Canadiens fought back, with Kyle Braybrook scoring the first goal of the night for the Canadiens.
Heading into the second, it would be the Canadiens that would pull ahead with a goal by Roddy MacDougall, followed by one by Braydon Burak.
With a score of 3-2 heading into the third period, the game will still anyone’s to win. Killam attacked first with a goal, but the Canadiens came back again to regain the lead with another MacDougall goal. With less than a minute left in the third, Killam scored again to tie up the game and force it to overtime.
In overtime, the Wheat Kings found the net with a game-winning goal by Clay Lang.
“We played really good,” says Young, when speaking of Saturday’s game. He says it’s unfortunate that there were a few mistakes made, because there could have been a few more points on the board in favour of the Canadiens.
“Overally, the guys played extremely hard,” says Young, adding, that’s all he can really ask for as a coach. “We’re going to have to play that way for the remainder of the series.”
The Canadiens will play game 3 at home tonight at 8 p.m. at the Clancy Richard Arena. Game 4 will take place in St. Paul on Thursday, at 8 p.m. also.
“We will need lots of fan support.”
