After fighting with rainy weather conditions for a good portion of the season, the Lakeland Baseball League was back in action on Thursday when the St. Paul Cubs took on the Cold Lake Cardinals at Jaycee Ballpark in St. Paul.

The sun stayed out while the two top ranked teams in the division battled in front of the St. Paul home crowd. It was a close game that was won in the second half when the Cold Lake Cardinals broke away winning the game 5-1.

“It was a really good game, it was 1-1 going into the seventh and then they were able to manufacture some runs,” said Corey deMossiac, Lakeland Baseball League President and Cubs player. “Cold Lake has played a lot of baseball lately, they have attended quite a few tournaments and they are going to be a tough team to beat in the playoffs.”

Thursday’s game was the first loss of the season for the St. Paul Cubs, but the team is still in first place in the division by one point with the Cold Lake Cardinals trailing closely behind.

This was the last scheduled home game for the Cubs, but due to uncooperative weather earlier on in the season, there may be more games played on the home diamond before league playoffs begin.

“We have three more games to make up, sometime here in the next three weeks, since we got rained out,” deMossiac said.

In addition to the regular season games and playoff games, St. Paul baseball fans will have something else to look forward to, as the St. Paul Cubs will be hosting a home tournament August 19-21.

The tournament will include teams from Edmonton and from Lacombe. League rivals Cold Lake Cardinals and Goodfish Braves will also be attending the tournament.

The Cubs will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Lac La Biche to take on the Dodgers and try to hold on to the number one spot in the division.
