The St. Paul Figure Skating Club has been on the road, travelling to competitions in Wainwright and Stettler with the local skaters doing very well.
First, five skaters travelled to Stettler for the Future Stars Fun Skate, where the girls showed off their skills and the progress they have made. Isabella Haag, Sophia Haag, Ella Lafrance, Jordyn Lotoski and Jessie Kurek made the trip and they all performed in their own solo, elements events, while Jordyn, Jessie, Ella, and Sophia competed in the team event.
For the team event, each skater was given one of four elements and they had to perform that element. Their results are as follows:
Isabella Haag: Elements-Silver; Solo - Gold
Sophia Haag: Elements-Gold; Solo - Gold
Ella Lafrance: Elements-Gold; Solo - Gold
Jordyn Lotoski: Solo - Silver
Jessie Kurek: Solo – Silver
Team Event (Jordyn, Jessie, Ella, and Sophia) – Gold
Coach Alyssa Kozicky was pleased with girls’ performance in their first event, saying, “It was the first skating competition for all of these girls and they all did really well.”
Kozicky explained that the next competition in Wainright was a Star Skate competition.
“In the Star Skate competitions, it is more for the figure skating girls. The girls at this level do the jumps and the spins and we had Cassia Lumby in Star 4, Sanj Pannu in Star 2, Adrianna Robertson in Star 1, and Brianna deMoissac in Star 1 as well.”
The girls all performed their own solo routine as well as a team event, although those results were not submitted in time for the Journals press deadline.
The results of the Wainwright Solo Competitions are:
Cassia Lumby – Star 4 - Bronze
Sanj Pannu – Star 2 – Bronze
Adrianna Robertson – Star 1 – Silver
Brianna deMoissac – Star 1 – Bronze
Kozicky added that the Wainwright Competition was a “good introduction” for the girls to help them get a feel for how these figure skating events work. Rather than being ranked against other skaters, the girls were given a report card on their skating to give them feedback on their progress and what they need to work on.
“All the girls were prepared both weekends, and did really well. I’m proud of all of them and we all had a lot of fun. It was also good to see so many skaters from our area at Wainwright because normally our area doesn’t host these events.”
Although the competitions were potentially the last ones for the season, the girls will keep practicing for next year’s events and keep advancing their skills. They will also be practicing for the club’s annual figure skating carnival, which will be held on March 19 at 1 p.m. at the Clancy Richard Arena.
