GALLERY: Canadiens take lead in series against Killam with OT win

St. Paul's Kurtis Labant scored the tying and overtime goals to help the Canadiens earn the win on Friday night.

ST. PAUL - It was another full house at the Clancy Richard Arena on Friday night as the St. Paul Canadiens took on the Killam Wheat Kings in Game 5 of a best-of-seven series in the NEAJBHL playoffs.

The game offered fans plenty of reasons to cheer, and kept them on the edge of their seats.

After three periods of play, the game was in a deadlock at 3-3 and required overtime to decide the winner.

Taking the lead in the first period, the Canadiens' Brody Green scored the first goal of the night in the first period, assisted by Jacob Leroux and Logan Higdon.

Domenic Morin would help the Canadiens extend the lead 2-0 with a shorthanded goal in the second period, helped out by Zandro Luck-Pallioto and Nicolas Beaudoin.

But, the Wheat Kings wouldn't give up the fight.

A powerplay goal from Carter Bruton, followed up by two goals from Kobe Charchun would give the away team the lead for the first time of the night.

Then, a powerplay opportunity for the Canadiens would tie the game up, with a goal from Kurtis Labant, assisted by Beaudoin and William Chemago.

After a third period, the game would still be tied 3-3, but putting plenty of pressure on Killam in overtime would seal the deal for the Canadiens.

Coming up big once again, Labant would score five and a half minutes into overtime. Earning assists on the goal was Luck-Pallioto and Beaudoin.

The Friday night win puts the Canadiens up 3-2 in the series, which will now head back to Killam for Game 6 on Sunday.

For those interested in taking in Sunday's game in person, a fan bus is being organized by the club and will leave at 3:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. game. Tickets are $20 each.

For more information about catching the fan bus, contact Marty Brousseau or Ryan Yopyk at 780-646-2016 or 780-614-5496.

If Game 7 is required, the teams will return to St. Paul on March 8 for an 8 p.m. game.

Elsewhere in the Jr. B league, the Wainwright Bisons are leading the series against the Vermilion Tigers, 3-0. Game 4 is scheduled for tonight (Saturday) in Vermilion.
