Local high school volleyball teams experienced highs and lows this past weekend as they played in Cold Lake and Thorhild.

JAWS boys take 4th in Cold Lake

The JAWS boys team placed fourth out of 10 teams at the tournament in Cold Lake. Coach Kevin Biollo said there were a lot of ups and downs, but they did alright.

“We played a couple of teams in our zone, and didn’t do quite as well as we hoped we would. We played St. Paul, which we consider one of our zone rivals, and we lost in three sets.”

The team had some of their players missing this weekend too. They lost to Mallaig in the semifinal. “They were close sets, and they beat us 25-22 and 25-23. They played well and out-defensed us,” said Biollo.

The boys are gearing up for Zones, and Billo said they have a good chance of winning but it’s up to them to come together as a team and practise all of the things they’ve been working on in order to do well.

JAWS girls 5th at Tournament

The JAWS girls didn’t fair as well as they anticipated at this weekend’s tournament in Cold Lake against 7 other teams, finishing fifth overall.

“I thought we should have finished higher,” said coach Ryan Biollo, adding that the girls were tied with two other teams for fourth, but points bumped them down to fifth.

“We lost three matches on Friday. We had little glimpses of really good volleyball and little glimpses of not so good volleyball this weekend,” said Biollo. “We couldn’t get everyone on the same page, and there was a bit of a meltdown. In the end, we’ll just learn from this and work on bringing it for Zones.”

Both teams have the Remembrance Day Weekend off, and will play at Zones on Nov. 19 and 20.

Ecole Plamondon Girls go to Consolation Final

The Ecole Plamondon girls coach Steven Reid said his team played alright at the 16-team tournament in Thorhild, though it wasn’t their best showing.

“We had three wins, two losses and a tie, and we were in third place after the round robin,” said Reid. “That sent us to the consolation final, and we lost to a team from Thorsby in three sets.”

The Plamondon boys were slated to attend a tournament in Boyle, but weren’t able to go at the last minute.

Ecole Beausejour Girls play well, finish 4th at Thorhild

Coach Andre Content said he was proud of his team for their fourth place finish at the Thorhild tournament last weekend, considering he was down players and had only two Grade 11 and five Grade 9 students playing.

“We were first in our pool, and we beat Redwater and Grassland. The team played really well this weekend. I’m looking forward to Zones,” said Content.

They play next at the Red Eye tournament in Boyle this Wednesday.
