The St. Paul Athletics Association (SPAA) hosted its annual junior golf finals last Thursday at the St. Paul Golf Course.

A total of seven boys teams and four girls teams ended up enjoying the day on the links. The boys played all 18 holes; the girls played nine. The tournament format was a Texas scramble, meaning teams played the best ball on every shot.

Gilles Gervais of Racette School, who served as coordinator of this tournament, said, “This tournament is primarily about the students having fun and growing their interest in the game so they will continue playing it when they get older.”

That objective was achieved.

“Today has been a lot of fun,” said Dawn Faichney, who competed on the Glen Avon girls’ team. “It is great to be able to golf with your friends.”

Daniel Hebert of the Racette boys team echoed those sentiments. He said that what made the day fun is “everyone on the team are friends.”

The school teams that captured the SPAA boys and girls banner in 2014 — Racette and Ashmont— successfully defended their respective titles.

Racette won on the boy side with a score of 77, a total of five strokes better than second place. At the end of 18 holes both Mallaig and Ashmont finished with a score of 82. Two extra holes had to be played to break the tie. Mallaig emerged as the winner of the tiebreaker to finish in second place.

The gap between Ashmont and second place Racette in the girls’ competition was much narrower. It was only one stroke. Ashmont posted a score of 48, while Team Racette earned a 49. Glen Avon rounded out the top three with a 54.

Gervais was very pleased with what he saw on Thursday. He said the tournament “was a great day,” and he offers “congrats to all the golfers for a terrific effort.”
