Last week, junior and high school volleyball teams from schools in the St. Paul Athletic Association descended on St. Paul Regional High School, Racette School, and École du Sommet for the annual SPAA Senior and Junior High Volleyball championships.

The tournament involved 10 girls’ teams and seven boys’ teams in total, with a couple of local schools’ teams missing, said Ian MacGillivray, coach for the Mallaig boys’ volleyball team.

“The skill level overall is probably the same as what we have for the last couple of years,” commented MacGillivray. Mallaig ended up doing well in SPAA volleyball yet again, with their senior girls team, seniors boys team and junior boys team all winning first place. Last year, the school completed the full sweep, but this year, the school’s junior girls did not compete in the finals.

In senior girls’ semi-finals #1, Glendon and Two Hills met up, with Glendon coming up on top, while Mallaig came up as the winner in its semi-final match-up with F.G. Miller.

In the final game, Mallaig School’s senior girls’ team won against Glendon in two sets, 25 – 19, and 25 – 21.

On the senior boys’ side, Mallaig and F.G. Miller met in semi-final #1, with Mallaig coming out on top, while Two Hills won its match-up against Glendon in semi-final #2.

In the final game, Mallaig won in three sets against Two Hills with a score of 25-15, 19-25 and 15-11.

In the junior boys’ category, Mallaig placed first after beating Two Hills in the final game in three sets, with the third set’s score at 16 – 14, in favour of Mallaig.

“I was quite happy with the result,” said Denis Jodoin, coach of the Mallaig’s junior boys’ team and also principal of the school, adding, “This is the second year in a row that we have won.

“It was a nice follow up this year with another victory,” said Jodoin, “We know that we are going to have it tough against Two Hills because they are a good team, and very well coached.”

Mallaig’s junior boys haven’t been able to beat Two Hills all year, with Two Hills winning all three of the previous match-ups of the year, explained Jodoin.

Ashmont and Glen Avon School competed in the final match for the junior girls volleyball, with Ashmont School coming out on top.
