Blair Hawes joins the Voyageurs from Selkirk, Manitoba, where he played for the Selkirk Steelers, a Junior A team, for four years. The 22-year-old forward, who is taking General Studies, heard about Portage College through word of mouth, and decided to apply.

“I had a couple of buddies who had told me about Portage, and the level of hockey here, so I decided to come because it’s one more opportunity to keep playing,” said Hawes.

He said the biggest adjustment to playing for the Voyageurs has been getting used to a shorter season with fewer games, and the bigger age difference between players.

“I’m playing with bigger guys, who are older and more mature, so that’s been different than playing at home.”

In the 2007/2008 season, Hawes was named League All-Star, and he was named Best All Around Defensive Player and his team’s Most Inspirational Player in 2008/2009.

Hawes said he enjoys the smaller community aspect of playing for Portage.

“Going to away games in other smaller communities, they don’t have the same atmosphere or fan base that we do. The fans are really great here.”
