The fifth running of the Fountain Tire Cup, a motocross race for kids, took place at the B3 Motocross Park on Saturday and Sunday. It is an event that appears to be picking up some serious steam.

There were 88 entrants in the 2015 race on Saturday, and 101 competing in Sunday’s races – a clear increase in participation over last year’s numbers.

“Word of mouth and more participation in the motocross club explains why we have had some serious participation growth this year,” says Cory Goodon, organizer of the event. “We have a lot of new families that are taking part. About 25 per cent of the riders here are new and have never raced before.”

Spirits were high throughout the two-day event, despite the rainy, cold weather. While adults do race throughout the weekend, the event is always geared towards the kids.

“This race is all about the kids,” says Goodon. “We have prizes for the kids that finish first, second and third in all the classes.”

Goodon adds that the older riders do a nice job mentoring the young riders throughout the weekend.

In addition to advice from the pros, the track itself helps these riders develop.

“It is a safe track,” says Goodon. “There is nothing you have to commit to. You can either roll or jump it and you won’t get hurt.”

The track earned a thumbs-up from first-time rider Dylan Zapisucki, 12, from St. Albert. Zapisucki used to live in St. Paul.

“I really liked the mud and the jumps. The camel jump and the no-namer jump are two of my favorites.” He rode an 85cc bike during the weekend.

Also riding an 85cc bike this past weekend was a veteran of the course - Cory Goodon’s 12-year-old son Brennan. He said his fifth Fountain Tire Cup experience has been a good one.

“I really like the whole event. The riding has been amazing and the track is in great condition.”

The organizers of the event would like to thank the St. Paul Fountain Tire and Cycle Works West for their support of the weekend.
