Plamondon Hawks host Zones for Lakeland girls 1A v-ball squads

Elk Point, Bonnyville, Two Hills and Mallaig included in girls' 1A teams competing at Zones

LAKELAND - Ten girls volleyball teams from 1A level high schools across the Lakeland are part of the 1A Girls Northeast Zone Championships at the Bold Center courts this weekend.

Hosted by the École Plamondon Hawks, the tournament was booked at the Bold Center courts instead of the Plamondon schools gymnasium due to space and COVID accommodations at the larger facility.

According to the Alberta Schools' Athletics Association, 1A team have less than 100 students in the grades representing the teams that are playing. Schools with between 100 and 299 students are in the 2A division and schools with 300-799 in the eligible grade levels are 3A schools.

The two-day tourney began on Friday night with the home-team Hawks opening with wins over Bonnyville's École de Beaux Lacs Attaque. The Friday night matches also saw the Elk Point's FG Miller Crusaders win against the E.H. Walter Trojans from Paradise Valley.

Other teams in Zones are the St. Mary's Saints from Vegreville, the Marwayne Wildcats, the Mannville Royals, the Mallaig Stingers, the Two Hills Tigers, and Vermilions's St. Jerome's Spartans.

Games continued Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at the Bold Center when Plamondon plays Elk Point. The quarterfinals begin at 3 p.m. with the finals set for 6 p.m.

We'll have results from the tournament in a later update at www.lakelandtoday.ca
