Portage curling team heads to regionals

Three Portage College curling teams head to Camrose for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regionals Nov. 22-24.

Three Portage College curling teams head to Camrose for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regionals Nov. 22-24.

The men ’s team was the most successful last weekend beating Grande Prairie College 8-7, Red Deer College 9-1 and Concordia University 9-1. They only lost the game they played against Lakeland College. Both the ladies ’ and the mixed team lost the four games they played.

Despite the mixed results, Portage athletic director Jim Knight is pleased with how the weekend went.

"We have only been on the ice since the start of November so to get these results after only practicing a couple times each week and playing in the leagues in Lac la Biche is huge,” he said. "It is all a learning experience for most of our curling team so with more practice and games before the next regional in January we are excited to see the growth this group will have. Most of the other schools have been on the ice since the start of October so we are a little behind with the ice not going into the curling rink until late October.”

The next regional game is at the end of January and will take place in Edmonton. If the Portage teams make it to the top four, they will head to provincials. In the meantime, they play in leagues around Lac La Biche.
