Portage men's futsal team clinches provincial spot

Voyageurs head to Lakeland College in March for ACAC futsal championships

LAC LA BICHE - The Portage College Voyageurs men’s soccer team is advancing to the 2022 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference futsal championships in Vermilion from March 26 to 27.

The team won both of their northeastern regional games — against the Keyano College Huskies and the Lakeland College Rustlers — held at the Bold Center earlier this month. The Voyageurs women’s team didn’t qualify for the championships, losing both of their games.

Futsal is a form of indoor soccer played in a five-on-five formation. The all-day playdowns held on February 19, saw the Voyageurs men’s team beat Keyano 5-2 with defenseman Jamie Ruhiga notching two goals and striker Mukire Kiroro picking up two points, including the final goal with seconds left in the game.

The team kept the momentum going for their second and final match of the day against the Lakeland College Rustlers, scoring twice in the opening five minutes and ending the first half with a four-goal lead. The Voyageurs won the game 7-4.

The Portage women’s team lost 8-1 to Huskies women’s team and a 10-2 to the Rustlers.

The provincial championships will draw the top team from each of the four ACAC futsal divisions across Alberta. The Keyano women’s team will join the Voyageur men’s team as the northeastern representatives in Vermilion.
