Portage out of playoffs, last games at home Feb. 24 weekend

Portage wins one, loses one with Concordia. Regular season wraps up on home ice Feb. 24 weekend

LAC LA BICHE - Mathematically — it's over.

In order to clinch sixth place in the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference, securing the last spot for the upcoming playoff round, the Portage College Voyageurs men's hockey team needed two wins on the weekend over the Concordia Thunder.

They only got one.

The Voyageurs beat Concordia 7-3 on Saturday night in Edmonton, rebounding from a 4-2 loss to the Thunder on Bold Center ice Friday. The one-and-one weekend means the best the Voyageurs can hope for in the regular season standings, is a tie with Concordia for the sixth-place spot.

And just to get to that point, a lot must happen over the last two weeks of regular season play. The Voyageurs will need to win both of their last two games of the regular season against the Briercrest College Clippers. At the same time, Concordia will have to lose all four of their remaining games. And even then — the sixth-place tie breaker will come down to the win-loss record of each team. If Portage wins their last two games, they will move to seven wins on the season.

Concordia already has eight games in the win column.

Portage will play their two final regular season games against the Briercrest Clippers over the Feb. 24 weekend. Both of those games are on Bold Center home ice. The Thunder will be playing fourth place Augustana next weekend and then first-place Red Deer Polytechnic over the Feb. 24 weekend.

The playoff rounds in ACAC men's hockey begin on March 3.
