Justin St. Arnault of St. Paul Elementary School showed an intense focus as he completed his four laps of the Glen Avon Panther Run this past Thursday at the St. Paul Regional track. His school finished sixth with a time of 1:38.42. Racette finished first at 1:23:04.

The Racette Raiders have quite a knack of coming out on top in running events in the community. Just a week-and-a-half after it extended its first-place streak at the RCMP Road Race to 24 years, the school extended its winning streak at the Glen Avon School Panther Run to five years on the St. Paul Regional track.

Racette - which has won every single Panther Run to date - finished on top of a heap that consisted of nine teams from eight schools (Glendon School had two teams) by posting a time of 1:23:04, on Thursday. Finishing in the runner-up position was Elk Point Elementary School at 1:26:02. Rounding out the top three was the host Panthers with a time of 1:27:24.

Other schools competing at this event included Ecole Mallaig School, Myrnam School, St. Paul Elementary School and Heinsburg Community School.

Robyn Randall, who teaches physical education at Glen Avon, says this run is a highlight of the year for students in Grade 4, 5 and 6.

“With these students not being able to go onto the highway to take part in the RCMP Road Race, this run is their big sports event of the year,” she says. “It is a lot of fun and the students look forward to it.”

The race is very much structured like the RCMP Road Race. Teams are made up of six boys and six girls and each member of the team is responsible for running a certain portion of the race. In the RCMP Road Race each team member has to run one mile. In the Glen Avon Panther Run each student has to complete four laps around the track.

This run serves as great preparation for the annual track and field day most schools host. The following schools are hosting a track and field day for their elementary school students:

Glen Avon School (May 26)

Racette School (May 27)

Elk Point Elementary School (May 28)

Ecole Mallaig Community School (June 24)

Glendon School (Date to be determined)

Myrnam School (Date to be determined)
